🔥 Coping With the Heat: Shifting Tactics as Temperatures Rise
Breaking records year after year, global warming isn’t something that’s just coming in the future — it’s here with us, right now. Hot days and even hotter nights can take a toll on our bodies and minds. But there is hope: we can adjust our behavior and make better decisions to keep ourselves secure and even well during the heat.
🌿 Here’s What We Can Do:
💧 1️⃣ Stay Hydrated, Always
When it’s hot, our bodies lose water quickly. Drink water at regular intervals — even if you’re not thirsty. Keep a bottle with you wherever you are.
🏠 2️⃣ Create Cool Spaces
If you lack air conditioning, use fans and open windows at cooler times of the day. Keep curtains or blinds closed at the hottest times of the day to shade kids from direct sunlight.
🌳 3️⃣ Be Smart About the Outdoors
Ride early, late when temperatures are cooler and there’s good air. Steer clear from intense activities during the hottest time of the day (often from 12 to 4 PM).
👕 4️⃣ Dress for the Heat
Opt for loose, light coloured clothes in breathe areas such as cotton or linen. And, of course, don’t forget your hat and sunglasses!
🥗 5️⃣ Eat Smart & Light
Large meals can leave you feeling weighed down in the heat. Opt for lighter, refreshing fare — salads, fruit and cooling smoothies spring to mind.
🌱 6️⃣ Be Kind to Your Body
Hot temperatures add to the strain on your heart and your skin. Pay attention to your body: take breaks, seek out shade and don’t overexert yourself.
🌎 7️⃣ Think Big Picture
And even as we adjust on a day-to-day basis, we can make choices that minimize our impact on the planet and the global warming that we ultimately cause by using less energy, planting trees or reducing waste.
🌻 We’re in This Together
Overheating is everyone’s challenge but we’re stronger if we look out for each other. Check on neighbors, particularly elderly ones, and pass cool tips to friends. Small acts of kindness, compassion, empathy and care can add up and, combined, make a big difference — and bring us closer as a community. In this way we all can remain safe, strong, and hope full, every moment.
